Menstrual Cup 2024: The honest guide we all need
Hello, friend! If you have come this far, you are probably thinking about taking the leap into menstrual cup or you already have one and want to get the most out of it. Whatever your case, I am here to accompany you on this journey towards a more conscious and sustainable menstruation. As a woman who has gone through all the doubts (and some initial scares!), I want to share with you everything I have learned about this small object that has revolutionized the way I live my period.
What exactly is a menstrual cup and why is it changing our lives?
The menstrual cup is a small ally made of medical silicone that collects (not absorbs) our menstrual flow. Unlike tampons or menstrual panties , the cup is reusable for years, which not only saves us money (think of all those dinners with friends we can afford!), but we are also taking care of our planet. Doesn't it seem wonderful to be able to be sustainable while taking care of ourselves?
Using the menstrual cup is super easy: you can wear it for up to 12 hours at a time, a real game changer for us!
How to insert a menstrual cup step by step
Ok, this is the moment when we all felt a little lost at first, but don't worry! I'll share with you the tricks that worked for me to insert the menstrual cup correctly:
- Before first use, it is essential to know how to sterilize the menstrual cup: simply boil it in water for 5-10 minutes (as if it were a small spa for her 😉)
- Wash your hands thoroughly and find a comfortable position: squatting, sitting on the toilet or with one leg supported. Every girl has her favourite position, find yours!
- To know how to insert the menstrual cup correctly, fold it (I use the C-fold, but there are several methods) and insert it gently. The key is to relax, breathe deeply and you will see that it goes in without any problems.
- Once inside, the cup will open on its own, creating a secure seal. Gently twist it to make sure it is securely in place.
How to choose your menstrual cup size
Since each of us is unique, cups come in different sizes. It has nothing to do with age or weight, but rather with our flow and whether we have had vaginal births. I share with you this quick guide to menstrual cup sizes:
- Size S : Ideal if you have light to moderate flow and have not had vaginal births
- Size M : Perfect for heavy flow or if you have had vaginal births
My advice: if you have any doubts, start with the menstrual cup size S.
Care and pampering for your glass
Keeping your glass in perfect condition is super easy:
- During your period: wash it with water and neutral soap every time you empty it.
- Between cycles: sterilize the menstrual cup for 5 minutes in boiling water and store it in its cotton bag
- Important! Make sure the ventilation holes are clean
One last piece of advice from a friend
The menstrual cup is more than just an intimate hygiene product: it is a declaration of intentions. It is choosing freedom, sustainability and self-knowledge. It is being part of a community of women who choose to live their menstruation in a more conscious and respectful way towards ourselves and the planet.
At Anaissa we understand that every step towards a more sustainable menstruation is an act of self-love.
